We the People  proudly present a new Community Agreement to improve the Birmingham City Schools. And it wouldn’t have happened
without you.

Thank you for joining nearly 1,800 of your fellow citizens to raise your voice and say what you want for Birmingham City Schools in the future. More than 117 Community Conversations were held all across the city – in homes, churches, community centers, parks and workplaces, engaging people in every Birmingham neighborhood and all 23 communities.  Six of these conversations were conducted in Spanish for Birmingham’s growing Hispanic population.

Hundreds more spoke their minds and shared their dreams in one-on-one “Clipboard Conversations” conducted at community events in such places as Linn Park, Maclin Park, Roosevelt Park, the McWane Science Center, Jefferson Metrocare, and the Birmingham City Schools’ Davis Center during the Back-to-School Family Expo. Others responded to radio call-in shows in Spanish and English as the Yes We Can! Birmingham initiative sought to invite everyone to participate.

As you read what “We the People” have said, we hope you see here a reflection of your own thoughts and your desires for better schools.
We encourage you to help keep the conversation going as we work
together as a community – under this new agreement – to achieve
these important aspirations.

As we move forward with the formation of a new Birmingham City Schools Educational Foundation to turn your dreams into reality, let us all remember what one citizen said,

“Forget what has happened and think about what can happen…” especially if we continue to raise our voices together for a better Birmingham.

Sincerely,
